General Information

Common Questions

Will the treatment be painful?

We will take every measure to ensure that your procedure comfortablel.  If treatment is needed, we will inject a small amount of anesthesia to gently numb a concentrated area of your mouth.  Many patients fall asleep during treatment.  For most people, the feeling of numbness usually subsides after 2-3 hours.

What happens after the root canal treatment is finished?

It is very important for the success of your treatment to return to your general dentist right away to have the buildup (filling) and, if necessary, the crown (cap) completed as soon as possible after your root canal treamtent is complete.

How long will the procedure take?

We generally start by spending about 20-30 minutes during a consultation to diagnose the problem, review your treatment options, and assist you with making a fully informed decision.

If root canal treatment is appropriate, sometimes it can be completed in a single visit of approximately 60-90 minutes, depending on the complexity of your tooth.  Very often treatment will require 2 visits of 60 to 90 minutes each.  Although rare, we may recommend remedicating the tooth more than twice if you have a particularly robust infection.

You may have heard of other dentists doing all root canal treatments in one visit.  Take caution:   faster treatment is not always better treatment for you, but it is always more profitable for your dentist.  Taking the time to do it right the first time can save you frustration and money.  We are fully committed to speding as much time as necessary to provide the highest level of care possible.

Will I need to return to your office for follow-ups after the procedure is finished?

Yes, for most root canal treatments, we recommend that patients return to the office 1 year after the procedure was finished. Our office will send a reminder notice to you when you are due for a recall appointment.  This followup is at no cost to you, it is part of our commitment to ensuring long-term results.
